CAMP LICHTMAN AND CAMP PLEASANT

The Depression saw President Franklin Roosevelt scrambling to find ways to provide employment and stability to American families. At the same time, there were the ongoing efforts to preserve America’s natural resources. A demonstration project called the Recreation Demonstration Area (RDA) was created in part to make outdoor resources available to inner-city residents. From the 1936 report on the RDA, the following rationale was issued:

Washington, the nation’s capital, though one of the loveliest cities in the world because of its tree-arbored streets and unusual park area, despite its variety and quantity of outdoor recreational facilities, has never had an adequate place where the lower-income families might go to rest and play, particularly in the summertime, when life in low-lying Atlantic seaboard cities is not comfortable .
